Week 4 - Out-There Textures
Day 3 - Box Stitch
Today we're going for a reallllly complicated, but oh so satisfying, stitch!
The Box Stitch. It combines the techniques we've been using, like single and double crochet, shells, post stitches, and stitching into rows below, and turns them into a gorgeous geometric pattern with tons of texture and visual oomph. It looks fantastic all in one color, but I decided to go all out and do some colorwork for my swatch. The instructions below include the locations for color switchouts.
This stitch is totally do-able, but it's difficult to follow the written pattern (in my opinion). My recommendation is to use the written pattern to supplement the chart, which you can find at mycrochetpattern.com here along with a video tutorial.
This is a pretty dense fabric, so it's going to work best in projects that don't need a lot of drape. Cardigans, accent blankets (not drapey ones), and scarves come to mind. This swatch was made with worsted-weight yarns, but you'd get more drape out of thinner yarns like sport or DK-weight.
It's not reversible, or at least, the reverse side isn't as detailed and pretty, as you can see here:
What it's good for:
- Scarves/cowls
- Accent Blankets
- Sweaters
- Skirts
Alternate Names:
- None that I could find

Stitch Instructions:
For each tutorial I'll include instructions written out long-form for intro-level crocheters and short-form for more advanced crocheters. The instructions are the same but include different levels of detail. Use whichever you prefer!Intro-Level
Chain a multiple of 10, then chain 2.With Color A
Row 1: In the 3rd ch from the hook *sc. sk the next 4 chains, [5dc, ch1, 5dc] all in the next st, sk the next 4 chains*
Repeat from * to * until there is only 1 ch left in the row. Sc in that last ch.
Row 2: Turn and ch1. sc. 5fpsc (around the posts of the 5 dcs).
*ch1, sk the ch, 11fpsc* (You are putting a fpsc around the posts of all dcs in the shells as well as the scs between them. The ch1s are directly above the previous row's ch1s, which are in the center of each shell and which you sk.)
Repeat from * to * until at the center of the final shell (7 sts left in the row).
ch1, sk the ch, 5fpsc around the dcs, sc in last st, changing colors with the yarn-over.
With Color B
Row 3:Turn and ch4 (this equals a turning ch of 3 + a ch1 as the 1st st of the row)
Dc in 1st sc.
*ch3, sk the next 5 sts, sc in the ch sp, ch3, sk the next 5 sts, [dc, ch2, dc] all in the next st*
Repeat from * to * until you get to the final shell (12 sts left in the row).
ch3, sk the next 5 sts, sc in ch sp, sk the next 5 sts, [dc, ch1, dc] in the final st (which is a sc).
Row 4: Turn and ch1. sc, ch1, sk the ch, sc. (you are putting a ch1 directly over the previous row's ch1 and skipping that st)
*ch3, sk over the 3 chains, sc, ch3, sk over the 3 chains, sc, ch2, sk over the 2 chains, sc* (here you are mimicking the pattern of the previous row, putting sts in sts and chaining over chains).
Repeat from * to * until the final shell.
ch3, sk over the 3 chains, sc, ch1, sk over 1 ch, sc in the top of the ch3.
Row 6: Turn and ch2 (equals a turning ch1 + ch1 as the 1st st)
*11fpsc, ch1, sk over the ch*
Repeat from * to * until the end. Sk over the final ch. sc in the top of the turning ch3, changing colors with the yarn over.
With Color C
Row 7: Turn and ch1. sc in 1st sc.
*ch3, sk6 (the ch and 5fpsc), [dc, ch2, dc] in the next st (the fpsc in between shells). ch3, sk6, sc in ch sp*
Repeat from * to * until the end, putting the final sc in the ch (not the space).
Skipping over all of the previous row's chains *ch3, sc, ch2, sc, ch3, sc* (again here you are mimicking the pattern of the previous row, putting sts in sts and chaining over chains).
Repeat from * to * to the end, putting the final sc in the final sc.
Row 9: All sts in this row are placed in ch spaces in rows below. Turn and ch1.
*sc in the ch sp 4 rows below (Row 5). skipping all sts between, [5dc, ch1, 5dc] in the ch sp 2 rows below (Row 7)*
Repeat from * to * to the end. Finish with a sc in the final ch sp 4 rows below (Row 5).
Repeat Rows 2-9, changing colors ever 4 rows.
Advanced

Row 2: Turn and ch1, sc, 5fpsc, *ch1, sk1, 11fpsc* Repeat from * to * until at the top of the final shell. ch1, sk1, 5fpsc, sc and change colors.
With Color B
Row 3: Turn and ch4 (turning ch + 1), dc in 1st sc, *ch3, sk5, sc in ch sp, ch3, sk5, [dc, ch2, dc]* Repeat from * to * until final shell. ch3, sk5, sc in ch sp, ch3, sk5, [dc, ch, dc].
Row 4: Turn and ch1. (Skipping over all chs) sc, ch1, sc, *ch3, sk3, sc, ch3, sk3, sc, ch2, sk2, sc* Repeat from * to * until the final shell. ch3, sk3, sc, che, sk3, sc, ch1, sk1, sc in top of turning chain.
Row 5: Turn and ch4 (turning ch3 + 1). 5dc into ch sp 2 rows below (Row 3). *sc into ch sp in center of shell 4 rows below (Row 1), [5dc, ch, 5dc] in ch sp 2 rows below (Row 3)* Repeat from * to * until 1 shell remains. sc into ch sp in center of shell 4 rows below (Row 1), 5dc into ch sp 2 rows below (Row 3), ch1, dc.
Row 6: Turn and ch2 (turning ch + 1). *11fpsc, ch1, sk1* Repeat from * to * across. sk final ch, sc in top of the turning ch, and change colors.
With Color C
Row 7: Turn and ch1, sc, *ch3, sk6, [dc, ch2, dc], ch3, sk6, sc in ch sp* Repeat from * to * across, putting the final sc in the ch (not the sp).
Row 8: Turn and ch1, skipping all chains *ch3, sc, ch2, sc, ch3, sc* Repeat from * to * across.

Repeat Rows 2-9, changing colors every 4 rows.
Tips and Modifications:
- This is a challenging repeat, and I found that I needed to keep the pattern close at hand. It helps to use a chart, and I recommend following along with the chart in the link below.
