Week 1 - Puff Stitch Variations
Day 2 - V-Puff Stitch
Day 2! Where yesterday's Boxed Puff Stitch gave us symmetrical, but angled, rows of puff stitches, today's stitch creates columns of perfectly aligned pairs of puffs. They look like braids, or maybe columns of tulips, and the fabric created is flexible and airy while also being cozy and squishy.
What it's good for:
- Hats
- Scarves/cowls
- Cardigans
- Potholders
- Other Apparel
Alternate Names:
- V-Shaped Puff Stitch
- V-Stitch Puffs is a different stitch that creates rows of aligned v-puffs instead of columns.

Stitch Instructions:
Puff Stitch (puff): Yarn over and insert hook in next stitch. Yarn over and pull through. Repeat two additional times. You should have 7 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops. Chain 1 to secure. For each tutorial I'll include instructions written out long-form for intro-level crocheters and short-form for more advanced crocheters. The instructions are the same but include different levels of detail. Use whichever you prefer!
Intro-Level
Chain a multiple of 3 + 3 additional chains.Row 1: In the 5th ch from the hook, *[2puffs] in the same ch, sk2 chains* (skipped 4 chains = turning chain of 3 + 1 skipped ch).
Repeat from * to * across until 3 chains are left in the row.
[2puffs] in the next ch, sk 1 chain, dc.
Row 2: Turn and ch3. Skip all stitches other than the space between puffs in each pair.
*[2puffs] in the ch sp between puffs*
Repeat from * to * across to the end of the row.
When there are no puffs remaining, sk1, dc in the top of the turning ch.
Repeat Row 2 until you reach the desired size.
Advanced
Chain a multiple of 3 + 3.Row 1: In 5th chain from hook *[2puffs], sk1* Repeat from * to * until 3 sts remain. [2puffs], sk1, dc.
Row 2: Turn and ch3. Sk all sts except the ch sp between each pair of puffs. [2puffs] in each ch sp across. dc in top of turning ch.
Repeat Row 2 until you reach the desired size.
Tips and Modifications:
- There are various instructions for the V-Puff Stitch, and they differ in the number of stitches to skip, the number of loops for each puff, and how many chains to put between puffs. I like this version, which creates some, but not a ton of, space between the vertical puff columns and ensures that the puffs are plenty puffy.
- Starting with a foundation row of chains works just fine but tends to put a stiffer edge on the bottom. I prefer to start with a row of foundation single crochet (fsc), which gives a much stretchier edge.
- If you start with a row of fsc, stitch a multiple of 3 + 1. Then ch3, skip 1, and start in the 2nd fsc. Then proceed with the pattern as written.
