Textured Shell Stitch - Crochet Tutorial

Week 3 - Shell Variations

Day 5 - Textured Shell Stitch

There is just something about the Textured Shell Stitch... it's old-fashioned but the dense and overlapping shells speak to the modern as well. I can see this working perfectly for a cropped sweater with a wide neck and generous long sleeves. I can also see a traditional triangle shawl with fringe or a scalloped edge. And of course, the dense fabric would be wonderful for a cozy couch blanket to curl up in and watch the sun rise. Yep, this is a fantastic stitch, and I'm so excited to add it to my arsenal!

Now, I will admit that this is a challenging stitch. It takes a bit of careful figuring to get the stitches worked into the correct spots. But follow the written instructions carefully AND check out the photo tutorial linked at the bottom of this post, and you'll have it down in no time!

What it's good for:
  • Scarves/cowls
  • Blankets/coverlets
  • Sweaters
  • Shawls
  • Bags/purses

Alternate Names:

  • There are other stitches known as the "Textured Shell Stitch" that look completely different. I didn't find any other names for this particular stitch.
  • I propose we call this one the Deco Fan Stitch. To me it looks so art deco!

Stitch Instructions:

For each tutorial I'll include instructions written out long-form for intro-level crocheters and short-form for more advanced crocheters. The instructions are the same but include different levels of detail. Use whichever you prefer!

Long Double Crochet (ldc): Work a double crochet loosely into the indicated stitch 5 rows below the current row - that is, into the same space where you worked the indicated stitch 4 rows below. This is a little confusing, but for example, in Row 5 you'll work your ldc into the same space as the stitch used in Row 1, that is, the space in the foundation chain where you worked your Row 1 stitch. In Row 9 you'll be working your ldc into the same space where you worked the indicated stitch from Row 5, that is, into the space of Row 4.

Draw up the loops to the height of the neighboring stitches to prevent puckering the fabric.

Intro-Level

Chain a multiple of 12, then chain 2.

Row 1: sk the 1st ch

*sc in next 4 chains, sk 2 chains, [5dc] all in the next ch, sk 2 chains, sc in next 3 chains*

Repeat from * to * to the end of the row. sc in last ch.

Row 2: Turn and ch1, sc in 1st st.

*sc in next 2 sts, sk 1 sc, [bpdc around the dc, dc in the space between dcs] four times, bpdc around the last dc in the shell, sk 1 sc, sc in next 3 sts*

Repeat from * to * to the end of the row.

Row 3: Turn and ch1. sc in 1 st.

*sc in next st, sk 1 sc, [fpdc around post st, dc in space between post st and dc, dc in sp between dc and the next post st] x4, fpdc around last post st in shell, sk 1 sc, sc in next 2 sts*

Repeat from * to * to the end of the row.

Row 4:  Turn and ch1. sc in 1st st.

*sk 1 sc, 13 fpdc (placing a fpdc around each of the dcs and post sts of the shell), sk 1 sc, sc in next*

*Repeat from * to * to the end of the row.

Row 5:  Turn and ch3. Keeping your yarn loose, work 3ldc into the same sp as the 1st sc 4 rows below (that is, work into the same chain where you worked the 1st sc of Row 1).

*sk the sc sts and the 1st 3 post sts. 7sc. skipping all other sts, work 5ldc into the same sp as the middle sc 4 rows below (that is, work into the same space where you worked the 4th sc of the group in Row 1)*

Repeat from * to * across until you reach the final motif.

Sk the sc sts and the first 3 post sts. sc into the next 7 sts.

Sk the remaining post sts and sc sts. 3ldc (loosely) into the same sp as the final sc 4 rows below. hdc in final sc. (that is, place this hdc into your current working row)

Row 6: Turn and ch3.

Working with the group of 3ldc, skip over the first ldc. dc in the sp between the first 2 ldcs. bpdc around the 2nd ldc. dc in the sp between the 2nd and 3rd ldcs. bpdc around the 3rd ldc.

*sk 1 sc, sc in next 5 sts, sk1 sc. Working now with the group of 5 ldc, bpdc around each ldc and dc in each space between ldc sts (gives you 5 bpdc and 4 dc).*

Repeat from * to * until you reach the final motif.

sk 1 sc, sc in the next 5 sts, sk 1 sc.

Working with the final group of 3ldc, bpdc around the 1st ldc, dc in the sp between the 1st two ldc, bpdc around the 2nd ldc, dc in the sp between the 2nd and 3rd ldc.

dc in the top of the turning ch.

Row 7: Turn and ch3.

[dc in the sp between the 1st two sts, dc in the sp between the 2nd two sts, fpdc around post st] x2.*

*sk 1 sc, sc in next 3 sts, sk 1 sc. [fpdc over post st, dc in sp between post st and dc, dc in sp between dc and next post st] x4, fpdc over final post st in shell.*

*Repeat from * to * until you reach the final motif.

sk 1 sc, fpdc around post st, dc in the sp between the post st and the dc, dc in the sp between the dc and the next post st.

fpdc around next post st, dc in the spaces between the next 2 sets of sts.

dc in the top of the turning ch.

Row 8: Turn and ch1, sc in 1st st.

6fpdc around each of the 6 dc and post sts.

*sk 1 sc, sc in next sc, sk 1 sc, 13 fpdc around each of the 13 dc and post sts*

Repeat from * to * until you reach the final motif.

sk 1 sc, sc in next sc, sk 1 sc.

6fpdc around each of the 6 dc and post sts.

dc in the top of the turning ch.

Row 9: Turn and ch1. sc in 1st st.

*sc in the next 3 sts, [5ldc] all in the same sp as the middle sc 4 rows below (that is, work these ldc into the same sp where you worked the 4th sc of the group in Row 5 - the space is the Row 4 st). Skip the sc sts and the 1st 3 post sts. sc in the next 4 sts.*

Repeat from * to * until the end of the row. Finish with a sc in the top of the turning ch.

Repeat Rows 2-9 until desired size is reached.

Tips and Modifications:

  • Not reversible.
  • I'd say my swatch doesn't really do justice to this awesome stitch because I ran out of yarn. I'd have liked to do another repeat. This stitch, in bulky-weight yarn, really eats it up!
  • For color-work, check out My Picot's photo tutorial below and scroll all the way to the bottom for instructions about when to change colors.
