Textured Wave Stitch - Crochet Tutorial

Week 4 - Out-There Textures

Day 1 - Textured Wave Stitch

Welcome to week 4! This week is all about textures that are way out there. It's amazing what you can do with a crochet hook, and this week we're learning how to use basic techniques to create textures that would make any project pop!

First up, the Textured Wave Stitch. This stitch uses a 2-row repeat and alternates groups of slip stitches with half double crochet. It also utilizes the back loop to push the texture out on the right side. This stitch is not reversible, although the back, or "wrong" side of the fabric also looks pretty cool. The fabric is dense and stretchy, so it's very versatile in terms of what kinds of projects it will work for.

What it's good for:

  • Scarves/cowls
  • Hats
  • Blankets/Afghans
  • Clothes (Sweaters, Skirts, Vests, etc)
  • Dishcloths
  • Potholders
  • Pillow Covers

Alternate Names:

  • None that I could find

Stitch Instructions:

For each tutorial I'll include instructions written out long-form for intro-level crocheters and short-form for more advanced crocheters. The instructions are the same but include different levels of detail. Use whichever you prefer!

Intro-Level

Chain a multiple of 10, then chain 6.

Row 1: ss in the 2nd ch from hook. ss in the next 4 chains.

*5hdc, 5ss*

Repeat from * to * to the end of the row.

Row 2: Turn and DO NOT chain.

*5blss (place st into the back loop only), 5blhdc*

Repeat from * to * until the end of the row. 5blss.

Row 3: Turn and ch 2 (counts as a hdc), 4 blhdc

*5blss, 5 blhdc*

Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.

Row 4: Repeat Row 3.

Row 5: Repeat Row 2.

Repeat Rows 2-5 until desired size is reached.

Advanced

Chain a multiple of 10 + 6.

Row 1: ss in 2nd ch from hook, 4ss, *5hcd, 5ss* Repeat from * to * across.

Row 2: Turn. *5blss, 5blhdc* Repeat from * to * across. 5blss.

Row 3: Turn and ch2, 4blhdc, *5blss, 5blhdc* Repeat from * to * across.

Row 4: Repeat Row 3.

Row 5: Repeat Row 2.

Repeat Rows 2-5 until desired size is reached.

Tips and Modifications:

  • This pattern is an AABB repeat, and as written, you finish each row with the same stitch you started with (start the row with 5blss, end the row with 5blss). This creates a nice symmetry on flat items like a scarf. But when working in the round, start with a foundation row of a multiple of 10 + 1 so that you finish each round with the opposite stitch.
  • When rows end in a blss, the stitch tends to disappear and is easy to miss. When you're putting the final stitch of a row into a ss, be sure to count and make sure you have 5 stitches of that group and you don't miss the last one.
