Week 1 - Puff Stitch Variations
Day 3 - Braided Puff Stitch
Onwards and upwards to the Braided Puff Stitch! We've got two awesome puff stitch variations under our belt, and this one is a wee bit more challenging. It looks fantastic, though, and has a ton of texture. The stitches themselves are really simple, just a series of chains, double crochets, and puffs. It's the placement that can be a bit tricky, but once you get the hang of it, it's no problem!
I've written out instructions, but I also recommend checking out the video tutorial and chart in the link at the bottom, as they will help you get that placement correct.
Also, this puff stitch includes more loops than the two previous stitches this week - a total of 5 repeats for 11 loops on your hook. This creates a super-puffy puff that really gets makes for a braided look!
What it's good for:
- Hats
- Scarves/cowls
- Cardigans
- Potholders
- Eyecatching embellishments in larger projects
Alternate Names:
- None that I could find

Stitch Instructions:
Puff Stitch (puff): Yarn over and insert hook in next stitch. Yarn over and pull through. Repeat four additional times. You should have 11 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 11 loops. Chain 1 to secure. For each tutorial I'll include instructions written out long-form for intro-level crocheters and short-form for more advanced crocheters. The instructions are the same but include different levels of detail. Use whichever you prefer!
Intro-Level
Chain a multiple of 2 + 3 additional chains (these count as the 1st dc).Row 1: dc in the 6th ch from the hook. ch1
Crossing over the front of the dc, puff in the 4th ch from the hook. This encases the dc and ch1 inside the puff.
*sk 1 st and dc in next. ch1. Crossing over the front of the dc, puff in the same ch as the previous dc (the next ch from the previous puff).*
Repeat from * to * until there is 1 ch left in the row.
dc in final ch.
Row 2: Turn and ch3. Skipping all other sts, dc in the sp between the 1st and 2nd puffs. ch1.
Crossing over the dc you just made, place a puff in the sp between the ch3 and 1st puff.
In the sp between the 2nd and 3rd puffs, place a dc and ch1.
Crossing over that dc, place a puff in the ch sp between the 1st puff and the dc that runs through it. You'll need to wiggle the puff st to find this space.
Continue putting a dc in the space between the next two puffs, ch1, then cross over the new dc and place a puff in the ch sp between the previous puff and the dc that runs through it across until you reach the end of the row.
When you only have 2 puffs and the turning ch3 left, put a dc in the ch3 sp, ch1, then cross over and place a puff in the ch sp between the 2nd to last puff and the dc that runs through it.
dc in the top of the turning ch3. You will NOT put a puff in the final puff.
Repeat Row 2 until you reach the desired size, changing colors after every even row (2, 4, 6, etc.)
Advanced
In this case, there is no simple way to write out the instructions and get the correct placement. Refer to the Intro-Level instructions.
Tips and Modifications:
- Placement is paramount for this stitch, so be careful where you place your puffs. If you put the puff in the space between puffs instead of the ch sp inside the puff, you'll just get alternating puffs instead of the braid.
- For additional help, refer to the video and chart in the link below. The video is in Spanish, but even if you don't understand Spanish, the video is a great way to see exactly where to place those puffs.
